2026 Season · Global Tropical Cyclone Activity

Accumulated Cyclone Energy, worldwide, in real time

Every ocean basin, updated from the operational best tracks — NHC's working best track for the Atlantic and East/Central Pacific, and the NCAR-RAL / JTWC open b-decks for the Western Pacific, both Indian Ocean basins and the South Pacific — measured against a 30-year climatological normal for the same point in the calendar.

ACE vs. Normal

BY BASIN · YEAR TO DATE

Year-to-date ACE for each basin and hemisphere, against the 1996–2025 average through today's date — not the full-season normal, so early-season basins aren't unfairly dinged. Bars show percent of normal-to-date; the tick marks 100%.

CUMULATIVE ACE vs. ENVELOPE

Cumulative ACE built up day by day through the calendar year (bold blue), against the 30-year climatological envelope: shaded bands are the 10–90% and 25–75% range of 1996–2025, the dashed line the average pace. Pick a basin.

The Long View

1970–PRESENT · @RYANMAUE

The multidecadal backdrop. Global tropical-cyclone energy and frequency have swung up and down with ENSO and other natural cycles for 50+ years, with no significant long-term trend — the running-sum charts I've maintained for two decades.

Global tropical cyclone ACE, 24-month running sums, 1970 to present (Global vs Northern Hemisphere)
Global ACE — 24-month running sums. Global vs. Northern Hemisphere. IBTrACS 4.1 (JTWC+NHC+Neumann) + operational ATCF b-decks.
Global tropical cyclone ACE, annual totals, Global / Northern Hemisphere / Southern Hemisphere, 1981 to present
Global ACE — annual totals. Global, Northern & Southern Hemisphere, by year. 1981–present.
Global tropical cyclone frequency, 12-month running sums: tropical storms, hurricanes, major hurricanes
Global frequency — 12-month running sums. Named storms, hurricanes, and major hurricanes. Counts of tropical storms / hurricanes / majors.
Global major hurricane frequency, 12-month running sums: all hurricanes vs major hurricanes
Major-hurricane frequency — 12-month running sums. All hurricanes (≥64 kt) vs. majors (≥96 kt). Last 30-yr annual mean: ~45 hurricanes, ~24 majors.

PACE & CONTEXT

    The signal, honestly stated

Global tropical-cyclone frequency shows no significant long-term trend, and global ACE varies enormously from year to year with ENSO and other natural cycles. Per NOAA-GFDL: "it is premature to conclude with high confidence that increasing atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations from human activities have had a detectable impact on Atlantic basin hurricane activity." This page reports what the operational best tracks actually show, basin by basin, without a thumb on the scale.
