What's in a Hurricane's Name

Storms are named in order from a list fixed before the season starts, so the letter a storm carries is really a count: Ida is the ninth named storm, Otto the fifteenth. That makes the date the first M forms a measure of how fast a basin burned through its alphabet — and it makes the average of those dates do something that looks impossible.
